St Martin

The Dutch-French Caribbean Island of St Maarten

Although the Caribbean island of St Maarten is one of the smallest, it is in fact divided between the Netherlands Antilles and the French governments. The northern French side of the island covers 21 square miles while the Dutch side to the south is just 16 square miles in size. Although there are signs and monuments defining the two distinct areas, there is no border as such. It is one of the most diverse, colorful and fun Caribbean islands to visit bringing together the best of both cultures.

Although there are separate currencies, languages, and even an international telephone system between the two areas, in practice English is widely spoken and US dollars or euros are accepted almost everywhere.

The Princess Juliana International Airport is on the Dutch side of St Maarten. The capital is Philipsburg, known as a busy cruise port with excellent duty-free shopping particularly for jewelry. There is also an open-air market and plenty of local restaurants including Burger King, McDonalds and Pizza Hut. St Maarten has a number of sandy beaches and the clearest Caribbean Sea for swimming and snorkeling. The Dutch side of the island also has a lively nightlife and several casinos.

Marigot is the capital of the French side and the designer shops and boutiques have a distinctly French style with chic fashions and slightly higher prices. The long stretch of sand at Orient Bay is known for its nudist sunbathing at one end and is lined with small beach bars and restaurants. The gourmet dining along Grand Case is legendary, set in a charming rural location.

Although the towns are easy to explore on foot, a car or motor scooter is necessary for exploring the inland areas and reaching the more remote beaches. The roads around St Maarten can be quite steep and narrow to drive and the locals drive around at speed!

St Maarten is a delightful place to choose for a Caribbean vacation. With a range of luxury villa accommodation, beautiful beaches, top shopping and plenty to see and do, St Maarten has all the ingredients for a great Caribbean vacation.
